Karuah Oyster & Timber Festival returns to Lionel Morten Oval

Karuah will celebrate its oyster farming and timber heritage on Saturday 17 October, when the Karuah Oyster & Timber Festival returns to Lionel Morten Oval from 9am to 4pm for a free day of woodchopping, fresh oysters, market stalls and family fun.
A local tradition for more than 20 years
The festival has been running in some form for more than two decades, showcasing the two industries that helped shape this riverside town. After a weather-related move in 2024, the oval became the festival's official home in 2025, giving it room to grow with more than 40 stalls.
Last year's event drew an estimated three to four thousand people across the day. This year the Karuah RSL Club returns as major sponsor.
Woodchopping, oysters and more
Woodchopping runs throughout the day, with nine events and heats scheduled. Part of the NSW Axemen's Association calendar, it draws competitors from around the country. In between the heats, the oyster eating competition takes centre stage.
Also on the program:
- The Great Karuah Duck Race
- Market and food stalls selling local produce, crafts, food and fresh seafood
- A jumping castle, new this year, alongside other kids' activities
Community groups have also been part of the day in past years, with a Lions Club barbecue raising money for childhood cancer research and local Rural Fire Service volunteers on hand with bushfire preparation tips.
