Swim Smart: Our Patrolled Surf Beaches
When you’re craving the thrill of the ocean, the wash of the waves, and that perfect stretch of golden sand, nothing beats our surf beaches. For your safety, the most important rule is to always swim between the red and yellow flags. These flags are placed by professional lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers to mark the safest swimming area on the beach, which is constantly monitored for rips and other hazards.
In the Port Stephens Council area, our primary patrolled surf beaches are:
- Fingal Bay Beach: www.fingalbeachslsc.com A stunning, curved beach protected by Fingal Head, this spot is a favourite for families and surfers alike. Its postcard-perfect setting is matched by the dedicated patrols that run throughout the main swimming season.
- Birubi Beach (Anna Bay): www.birubipointslsc.org.au As the northern gateway to the vast Stockton Bight sand dunes, Birubi is an awe-inspiring location. It’s a popular spot for surfing and swimming, and it is diligently patrolled for beachgoers.
- One Mile Beach (Anna Bay): Tucked away and beloved by locals, One Mile is a fantastic all-rounder. It uniquely boasts a year-round professional lifeguard service, making it a reliable choice for a safe swim any time of year.
Patrols at Fingal Bay and Birubi Beach are typically run by Port Stephens Council’s professional lifeguards on weekdays, and by the incredible volunteer surf lifesavers on weekends and public holidays, generally from the September/October school holidays through to the April school holidays. One Mile Beach remains patrolled by lifeguards seven days a week, all year round.

If you’re looking for the excitement of the ocean, the sound of the waves, and a great stretch of sand, our surf beaches are the place to go. The Serenity of the Bay: Port Stephens’ Calmer Waters
Our ocean beaches have exciting waves and wide stretches of sand, but Port Stephens also has many calm, family-friendly bayside beaches. These peaceful spots are great if you like gentle waters, safe paddling for kids, or just want a quiet swim away from the surf.
Stretching along the southern shores of Port Stephens, from Corlette to Soldiers Point and beyond, these bay beaches offer a different kind of coastal charm:
Dutchman’s Beach (Dutchie’s), Nelson Bay: Consistently voted one of the best family beaches, Dutchie’s offers soft white sand, calm turquoise waters, and a lovely foreshore walk. It’s perfect for toddlers to splash safely and for a relaxing paddle.
Little Beach, Nelson Bay: A hub of activity, Little Beach features a lovely jetty for fishing, a boat ramp, and incredibly calm waters perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or just floating. It also has excellent picnic facilities and often food vans.
Shoal Bay Beach, Shoal Bay: The long stretch of white sand along Shoal Bay is iconic. With views across to Tomaree Head and Port Stephens, its calm waters are ideal for swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the foreshore.
Fly Point Aquatic Reserve, Nelson Bay: While not a “beach” in the traditional sense, the protected waters around Fly Point are superb for snorkelling and diving, offering an incredible glimpse into the underwater world of the bay. Its calm entry points make it accessible for many.
Salamander Bay Beach, Salamander Bay: A vast, often quiet stretch of bay, great for long walks, collecting shells, and enjoying the serene environment. Its shallow waters are perfect for families.
Soldiers Point Foreshore: While there isn’t one single “Soldiers Point Beach,” the foreshore offers numerous small, sandy coves and calm water access points, perfect for a quiet dip or for kids to play in the sand away from crowds.
These bayside beaches are usually much calmer than the ocean, but they are not patrolled by surf lifesavers since the surf is different. So, it’s important to take personal responsibility. Even in calm water, always stay alert, watch children closely, and know your swimming limits.
Enjoying Our Backyard Responsibly
Whether you’re catching waves at Birubi, building sandcastles at Dutchie’s, or exploring the underwater world at Fly Point, Port Stephens offers an unmatched aquatic experience.
