Setting your map? Port Stephens is the name of the whole region and the bay, not a single town. For the main tourist hub, search for Nelson Bay.

Anna Bay, Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay and Salamander Bay are all within about 20 minutes of each other, so wherever you stay, you're close to everything.

A main road runs from Raymond Terrace to Salt Ash, with the turn-off to Medowie about halfway along. By car

Most families drive, and since the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace opened in September 2026, the trip has fewer stop-start bottlenecks.

From Sydney and the Central Coast

  1. Head north on the M1 Pacific Motorway.
  2. At Black Hill, stay on the M1 as it carries on along the new 15 km extension over the Hunter River.
  3. Follow the signs for Nelson Bay and Port Stephens.
  4. Take Nelson Bay Road into the peninsula, past Williamtown, Salt Ash and the turn-offs to Anna Bay. You're here.

From the north

Coming from the Mid North Coast or Queensland, head south on the Pacific Highway to Raymond Terrace and follow the Nelson Bay signs.

From Newcastle

Cross the Hunter River at Hexham or Stockton and follow Nelson Bay Road. It's about 45 minutes to Nelson Bay.

Allow extra time on Friday afternoons, long weekends and school holidays, when Nelson Bay Road gets busy.

Towing a caravan or boat? The bigger attractions and holiday parks have trailer-friendly parking, but town centre spots in Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay fill fast in summer. Park once, then walk or catch the bus.

By plane

Newcastle Airport at Williamtown is just 25 minutes from Nelson Bay, and only 10 km from Oakvale Wildlife Park, so the holiday can start the moment you land.

There are direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Ballina/Byron, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast and several regional centres. Routes change with the seasons, so check the airport website before you book.

From the airport

  • Hire a car from the rental desks in the terminal.
  • Grab a taxi from the rank at the departures end of the terminal.
  • Book a door-to-door transfer through Newcastle Airport Information Services.
  • Catch the public bus with Port Stephens Coaches, which runs to the Nelson Bay area seven days a week.

By coach from Sydney

Port Stephens Coaches runs a daily express from Sydney, with pick-ups at Central Station, Chatswood, Pymble and Hornsby. With air conditioning, reclining seats, seatbelts and USB charging, it's an easy trip with kids, and nobody has to drive. It runs every day except Christmas Day.

By train and bus

Catch a NSW TrainLink or Sydney Trains service to Newcastle Interchange. From Stand 3, on the harbour side of the station, Port Stephens Coaches runs a public bus to Nelson Bay seven days a week. Some services also stop at Newcastle Airport and Williamtown.

No Opal card? No problem. You can tap on with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card.

Weekend and public holiday services run less often, so check the TripView or Transport for NSW app for live times, especially the last bus of the day.

By ferry from Tea Gardens

Coming from Tea Gardens or Hawks Nest? Skip the drive around the bay and take the passenger ferry instead. The crossing takes about an hour, through the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park and up the Myall River. Dolphins are a regular sight, so it doubles as a budget-friendly dolphin cruise.

Cars can't come on board, so drivers need to go the long way round via Karuah. Bikes are welcome and leashed pets are allowed. Wheelchair access is on some vessels only, so check before you book. Crossings depend on the weather, and the operators post daily updates on Facebook.

Getting around once you're here

A car gives you the most freedom, but the towns are close together and well linked.

  • Local buses connect Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Anna Bay, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point and Raymond Terrace, and take Opal or contactless cards.
  • Taxis run across the region, with a rank at Newcastle Airport.
  • Bikes and scooters are a great way to explore with kids, with shared paths linking many of the bay-side suburbs. Port Stephens Council has maps.
