Driven by Connection: How Cars & Coffee in the Bay Is Building a Stronger Community

Right in the heart of Port Stephens, something exciting is happening—something that revolves around shiny chrome bumpers, shared stories, and the delightful scent of freshly brewed coffee. What started as a simple get-together in a car park has transformed into a tradition that’s making a real difference in people’s lives. Cars & Coffee in the Bay, initiated by local champion David Campbell, has evolved into much more than just a car meet; it’s a heartfelt movement centred on connection, compassion, and community spirit.

From Spark to Engine: The Birth of a Movement

Back in December 2022, David Campbell had a straightforward idea: gather people together over a mutual love for cars. Having been a paramedic with over 30 years of experience, David recognised the incredible value of social connections—those casual chats and shared interests that unite us and help us feel like we belong to something greater.

“As a paramedic, I’ve seen and dealt with increasing numbers of mental health emergencies. Men in particular, due to traditional masculine ideals that emphasise self-reliance and emotional stoicism, are particularly susceptible to a decline in mental health.” David shares. Recognising this challenge, David wanted to create a space for connection and support, leading to the birth of Cars & Coffee.

What started as a small gathering has now flourished into a vibrant community hub. We welcome everyone—enthusiasts, families, and those seeking a fun morning in a friendly atmosphere. The event is alive with the sounds of revving engines and laughter, where every conversation is another chance to connect.

Mental Health in the Driver’s Seat

At its core, Cars & Coffee is a safe space for mental well-being. There’s no pressure, no stigma—just an inviting atmosphere where people can show up as they are. For many, the event has become a lifeline, providing a sense of belonging that’s often hard to discover elsewhere.

Cars and Coffee Toy Drive: Giving Back with Heart

This December, the community spirit revs up even more with the annual Cars and Coffee Toy Drive, happening on Sunday, December 7th, at Autobarn, Taylors Beach. The goal? To collect toys for children in need, spreading joy to families throughout the Hunter region.

But this Toy Drive is more than a charity event; it’s a celebration of community spirit. Attendees can expect:

– A stunning showcase of classic and custom cars
– Delicious Breakfast offerings from Port Stephens Marine Rescue
– Pirate Coffee will be making the coffee
– Discounts and exciting prizes on the day

Autobarn Taylors Beach has kindly opened its doors to host this special event, demonstrating the local business community’s commitment to giving back. This partnership embodies shared values of generosity, inclusiveness, and grassroots impact.

A Roadmap for the Future

As Cars & Coffee in the Bay continues to thrive, the mission remains clear: to create a welcoming space where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported. The movement has expanded to include two groups: one in Port Stephens, “Cars & Coffee in the Bay,” and a second in Maitland, “Cars & Coffee at The Levee.”

If you’re interested in joining, it’s easy—just visit the Facebook pages, answer a few questions, and stay updated on upcoming events. David also extends an open invitation to local businesses to partner with Cars & Coffee, amplifying their ability to lend a hand to those in need.

For now, though, all eyes are on December 7th—a day filled with roaring engines, open hearts, and the spirit of giving shining bright.

Whether you’re a car enthusiast, a parent, a supporter of mental health, or simply someone wanting to make a difference, the Cars and Coffee Toy Drive is your chance to be part of something extraordinary.

So, bring a toy, invite a friend, and come as your best self. Because in Port Stephens, being part of a community is more than just a concept—it’s the fabric of our everyday lives.
