In celebration of National Threatened Species Day, Port Stephens Council is inviting the community to explore the natural wonders of the Mambo Wetlands at a free, family-friendly event from 4pm Friday 6 September.
Participants will find out about the importance of the wetlands, learn about the native wildlife and plants that lie within and cap off the evening with a stroll to spot frogs, koalas and possums.
Council’s Natural Resources Team Leader Jordan Skinner says the evening will be a unique experience.
“The Mambo Wetlands aren’t just beautiful — they play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the port.
“The wetlands improve water quality, provide a nursery for fish and crustaceans, and are a vital food source for birds, insects and other native animals. They are also home to a large variety of wetland flora, some of which are threatened species.
“Anyone who has an interest in learning about the natural wonders of the wetlands is invited to come along to this free event.
“There will be an opportunity to explore the wetlands firsthand, get up close with koalas and possums, meet likeminded community members and learn how to protect this important community asset.
“The workshop has been made possible by a grant from the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust which is enabling us to restore and rehabilitate Mambo Wetlands, as well as educate the community about its importance.”
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the event is also an opportunity to celebrate the transfer of part of Mambo Wetlands back into community hands.
“The Mambo Wetlands is a precious part of the Port Stephens environment and an important community asset.
“This is a great opportunity to explore the wetlands firsthand, learn more about the important role it plays in maintaining the health of the port and find out how we can all do our bit to protect it.
“It’s also a wonderful way to celebrate the transfer of 7 lots at Port Stephens Drive back into community hands, so that we can protect Mambo Wetlands for future generations,” he said.
The Mambo Wetlands celebration is a free event from 4pm Friday 6 September 2019 at Joe Redman Reserve, Foreshore Drive in Salamander Bay. For more information, visit https://www.portstephens.nsw.gov.au/play/events/event-calendar/mambo-wetlands-celebration
